Sawn Rocks and Mt Kaputar

30 minute drive from Yera

Sawn Rocks is a cliff face of columnar basalt 40 metres high that looks for the entire world like a quarry from which a giant has carved long octagonal columns for a lost city. Indeed, the tumbled remnants of columns which have peeled off the cliff over thousands of years lie in Bobbiwa Creek, among lush undergrowth, creating the impression of a forgotten temple. Sawn Rocks is easily accessible from the road and definitely well worth a visit.

The Mount Kaputar National Park encompasses much of the ancient Nandewar Range east of Narrabri. It is possible to observe one-tenth of the State of NSW from the summit which rises to 1,524 metres (Mt Kaputar). The diversity of plant and animal life is one of the great appeals of the National Park. Volcanic intrusions such as the Yullundunida Crater and Ningadhun (a volcanic plug) have created spectacular and accessible scenery. Whether you go for an outing, a picnic, camping or bushwalking you’ll find the Mt Kaputar National Park offers memorable experiences which will be treasured.

Narrabri Gaol Heritage Centre and Historical Society

15 minute drive from Yera

In 1982 the old Narrabri Gaol celebrated its centenary – it also finished its life as a penal institution in the same year. It now houses the Narrabri Historical Society and its museum and has been restored and the cells house exhibitions and provide storage for the immense volume of memorabilia acquired for the Society such as – clothing, documents, photographs, newspapers, records, home wares, machinery and much more. A prize exhibit is the “Blacktrackers Hut” which was the home of legendary blacktracker, Major Pendennis. The Historical Society has a list of amusing incidents about escapes and would-be escapes from the facility. Without doubt an eye-opening experience just waiting to be enjoyed.

Australia Telescope

35 minute drive from Yera

The Australia Telescope array of six antennas at Narrabri is helping keep Australia at the forefront of leading edge astronomical research in the world. The radio-telescope provides the most powerful window on the universe available in the southern hemisphere. Six antennas of which five are mobile; huge 270 tonne structures riding on a three km ‘railway track’ and the sixth is fixed another three kms away.

The task of the radio-telescope is to pick up the very faint radio signals emitted by very distant stars and objects in the Universe, perhaps up to millions of light years away, uncovering mysteries so distant or shrouded by gas that they are not visible to optical telescopes. Thoroughly enjoyed by people from all over the world, the Australia Telescope is awaiting your visit.
